800 years Jubilee Celebration at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Agbor-Obi

On March 22nd, 2015, the friars, sisters, members of the Dominican Family and the parishioners of St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Agbor-Obi celebrated the 800 years Jubilee of the Order.

The Mass was presided by the Catholic Bishop of Issele-Uku diocese, Most Rev. Dr. Michael Odogwu Elue. In his opening remarks, he congratulated the Dominicans on the Jubilee celebration and thanked the friars for their contributions to the pastoral work and life in his diocese. He prayed God to continue to bless the mission of the Dominicans in Issele-Uku, in particular, in Nigeria and in the world in general.

On his part, the Parish Priest, Fr. Matthew Uwaya, O.P., thanked the bishop and all who honored his invitation to celebrate the Jubilee with the friars and sisters working in Agbor-Obi. He asked all to savor the joy of The Lord from which special strength was to flow to all present at the occasion.

During the Homily, the Promoter of the Jubilee, fr. Augustine Agwulonu, O.P., highlighted how the Dominican Vision of setting the world ablaze with the Gospel light has been progressively realized through the Dominican Mission of Preaching. The presence of the Dominicans in Agbor-Obi, in Issele-Uku diocese, is a testimony to the spread and effectiveness of the Dominican Mission in Nigeria, especially in this part of the country. The sermon also challenged the people to catch up with the spirit of renewal that is specially blowing during this jubilee period. It reminds them of the intention of the Order, that such renewal experience should enable us to preach the Gospel anew in our world today.

It was a spirit-filled and colorful celebration. The reception was a moment of joy with the cutting and sharing of the Jubilee Cake, dance and other attractions.

fr. Augustine Agwulonu, O.P. (Promoter of the Jubilee)
