Pray the Rosary daily... Why Pray the Rosary?
The Holy Rosary
The purpose of the Rosary is to help keep in memory certain principal events or mysteries in the history of our salvation, and to thank and praise God for them. There are twenty mysteries reflected upon in the Rosary, and these are divided into the five JOYFUL MYSTERIES, the five LUMINOUS MYSTERIES, the five SORROWFUL MYSTERIES, and the five GLORIOUS MYSTERIES.

The Rosary is divided into five decades. Each decade represents a mystery or event in the life of Jesus. There are four sets of "Mysteries of the Rosary" (Joyful, Luminous, Sorrowful, and Glorious). These four "Mysteries of the Rosary" therefore contain, a total of twenty mysteries. The Joyful, Luminous, Sorrowful, and Glorious Mysteries are then said on specific days of the week (see each set of mysteries below). During private recitation of the Rosary, each decade requires devout meditation on a specific mystery. Public recitation of the Rosary (two or more people), requires a leader to announce each of the mysteries before the decade, and start each prayer.

The Apostle's Creed is said on the Crucifix; the Our Father is said on each of the Large Beads; the Hail Mary is said on each of the Small Beads; the Glory Be after the three Hail Mary's at the beginning of the Rosary, and after each decade of Small Beads. In June 13, 1917, Our Lady asked that the Fatima prayer be added after each decade of the Rosary. It is a prayer of forgiveness to Jesus and is said following the Glory Be after each decade only.

The Preparation
  • Start by making the sign of the Cross »
  • In the name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
  • Then recite the Apostle's Creed »
  • I believe in God, the Father Almighty,
Creator of Heaven and earth; and in Jesus Christ,
His only Son Our Lord, Who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died, and was buried.
    He descended into Hell; the third day He rose again from the dead;
    He ascended into Heaven, and sitteth at the right hand of God, the Father almighty;
from thence He shall come to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Sprit, the holy Catholic Church,
the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body and life everlasting. Amen.
  • Then say 1 Our Father »
  • Our Father, Who art in heaven, Hallowed be Thy Name. Thy Kingdom come.
Thy Will be done, on earth as it is in Heaven. Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen.
  • Then 3 Hail Marys (for the virtues of Faith, Hope and Charity)
    • First Hail Mary »
    • Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee; Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.
Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of death. Amen.
    • Second Hail Mary »
    • Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee; Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.

    1st Joyful Mystery
    The Annunciation
Mary's humility is at the heart of the meditations on the Annunciation. Because Mary humbled herself God exalted her by choosing her to be the Mother of His Son. If you are to make progress in your spiritual life and your relationship with those you love, you must learn to imitate Mary's humility.

    1st Luminous Mystery
    The Baptism of Jesus
When Jesus was baptized He was instituting the sacrament of baptism. This sacrament washes away original sin from your soul and makes you a brother or sister of Jesus and a child of God. As a child of God you are an heir to heaven. To receive heaven as your reward you must make your life a reflection of Jesus' the way Mary did. To accomplish this you must study their lives. Do this by meditating on the events in their lives - pray the Rosary!

    2nd Joyful Mystery
    The Visitation
In this mystery Mary sets the example of neighborly love. Immediately after the angel told Mary she would be the Mother of Jesus, she went to help her cousin who was also expecting a baby. Mary's response to this great news was to disregard her own needs and share her joy with Elizabeth. You too must share your blessings and joys with those you love. You can start by sharing the Rosary with them.

    The Nativity
While Mary and Joseph were in Bethlehem, no one would give them a comfortable place to stay. Jesus had to be born in a stable. Would you have invited them into your home? To thee do we send up our sighs mourning and weeping in this valley of tears.
Turn then, most gracious advocate, thine eyes of mercy toward us,
and after this our exile show us the blessed fruit of thy womb, Jesus.
O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary.
Pray for us, O Holy Mother of God.
That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.
    Let us pray,
O God, whose only begotten Son, by His life, death, and resurrection,
has purchased for us the rewards of eternal salvation.
Grant, we beseech Thee, that while meditating on these mysteries of the most holy Rosary of the Blessed Virgin Mary,
that we may both imitate what they contain and obtain what they promise, through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, have mercy on us.
Immaculate Heart of Mary, pray for us.
  • Make the Sign of the Cross »
  • In the name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
